Project Description

This phased 400,000 GSF high rise Medical Research Building is in the heart of Nashville, TN at Vanderbilt Medical Center. This facility is dedicated to bio-medical research with 86 lab modules including comprehensive wet laboratories, and research offices.Phase I involved the addition of four floors above existing Light Hall (existing research facility). Phase II involved the addition of twelve floors above the existing Langford Auditorium between the north end of Light Hall and the Medical Library. The building was designed to LEED standards, although certification was not pursued.

Unique to the MRB IV project was the integration of a Phoenix Design Group, Inc HVAC design concept employing the Venturi-Wedge induction air system.The co-patented design by our own Principal, Tom Fisher, realized significant first-cost construction savings ($2.4 million) as well as even more operating cost savings accruing to Vanderbilt Medical Center. Recent national interest in this system type by the research industry has placed VUMC at the technical leading edge in the design community. The simplicity of the exhaust hood systems integration and control offers considerable infrastructure flexibility as well as yielding optimum energy cost benefits. Phoenix is very proud to have had the opportunity of sharing the use of this technology with its long time partner Vanderbilt Medical Center. The central powerhouse included a 4,500-ton central chiller plant and a 50,000 lbs/hr steam load from the central Campus Boiler Plant.
