Project Description

The TriMetis Specialized Laboratory is a 26,000 GSF located in the heart of the UT-Baptist Research Park in Memphis, TN. It is the only commercial GLP-focused specialty lab facility located not only in the Memphis, but also in the region. This truly is a unique facility that combines biomedical, pharmaceutical, and chemical research. The building was built with internal x-ray capabilities, while also designing for mobile CT and MRI units to attach to the building. The primary service of the building was to provide animal holding and procedure rooms. Furthermore, the labs were designed for animal holding areas for both large and small animals, quarantine, dirty cage washing, clean cage washing, sterilization, and large animal surgery suite.

This project offered multiple unique design challenges with importance placed on lab function and safety issues arising from this type of research facility. The plumbing in two of the animal holding areas were design for conversion to fisheries. Multiple small animal procedure rooms have a Class II, Type B2 Biosafety Cabinets with HEPA filtered supply air and HEPA filtered exhaust air. The remaining procedure rooms were designed as Class II, Type A2 Biosafety Cabinets. During the design phase, we took careful consideration to minimize energy usage while maintaining integrity of the facility all while following the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. An alternative cage rack ventilation solution was utilized to minimize energy usage.

This facility is a model of “green construction” and a showcase for energy sustainability. The facility incorporates several sustainable features and is designed to be USGBC LEED Silver certified with natural ventilation, renewable energy, open space, and quality environments inside and out. This is an very significant accomplishment for a research facility exclusively composed of vivarium space.
