Johnston Memorial Hospital represents a new greenfield hospital located in Abingdon, Virginia. Design in conjunction with Earl Swensson Associates, Phoenix Design Group Inc. is responsible for the total MPE and Fire protection design and construction administration. The hospital’s contemporary architecture includes a vertical, five-story atrium, and 327,000 GSF. Natural light is infused throughout the building with all floors having balconies with glass railings overlooking the atrium. Natural light was also a design feature for the CCU waiting room and the Emergency Department.
The hospital designed and received Gold-Level LEED Certification and was also named as one of the 30 most Environmentally-Friendly Hospitals in the World by Healthcare-Administration-Degree in 2014. The facility incorporated water-saving fixtures, motion-sensing lights, and energy efficient mechanical systems. The powerhouse includes 2100 tons of centrifugal refrigeration in three primary/secondary arranged chillers, two 600 BHP steam boilers which provide the source for space heating, domestic water heating, sterilization, and humidification, and 3125 KVA of emergency power generators. The facility was designed with future expansion possibilities to allow a future growth opportunity with minimal disruption to existing services.
